volunteers.

Community Law Canterbury relies on volunteers to deliver its services. If you are a law student or a practicing lawyer we have opportunities for you to help your community. We run volunteer intakes throughout the year, depending on demand.

The following services are looking for student volunteer caseworkers. Complete the form at the bottom of the page to register your interest:

General Service Drop-In

Talking to clients one on one, gathering facts and delivering advice on a variety of topics. You’ll need to have good interpersonal skills and be able to find the legally relevant information and present it to a lawyer. You would be needed for two hours every two weeks on either a weekday evening or a Saturday morning in our central office. We ask for only students who are third year and above.

Infoline service

Talking to clients over the phone and providing information. It involves a lot of researching and quickly improves you general law knowledge. You would be needed for a morning/afternoon on a weekday every two weeks in our central city office. This service is essential to the running of our law centre.

Family Advice Clinic

Talking to clients who are often in incredibly distressing situations, gathering facts and preparing court applications. You would be needed on Wednesday afternoon/evening every two weeks. We ask for only students who are third year and above.

prison advice service

Helping the most vulnerable in our community. Talking to prisoners at the three Christchurch prisons, researching and writing advice letters. You would be needed as often as you can commit, usually on a Friday for the whole day.

community Iwi panel - Te pae oranga

Community Iwi Panel is a alternative to court for low level offending and follows a restorative process. Volunteers would sit on a Panel and help an offender repair the harm that was caused. There are training sessions and workshops that you will need to complete along with a Police background check. You do not need to be a law student to volunteer for this, any member of the community that has an interest in restorative justice is welcome.
